defriended Dear Facebook Friend,

I am defriending you today. I know we’ve been friends for at least 3 months now, but it is time for us to go our separate ways.

A few weeks ago I had over 3700 Facebook friends. You are currently not making the next set of cuts – it’s not you, it’s me. During this time in my life I realize that I need more from my Facebook companions. The occasional Like or comment is welcomed, but I’ve noticed that  you having absolutely no viral contact with me and that is not acceptable. How will I know you are paying attention to my travel adventures or what I ate for lunch, if you don’t interact with the post and leave a virtual trail?

Did you not like it when I clicked Like to a group that someone else invited me to instead of yours? You know, don’t answer that. It’s all in the past. Like I said, at this juncture in my life I simply require more. I know you will continue on with your Facebook days as will I. We will go on to post more pictures of our children and our inner most thoughts about life and living, however, we will only do it without each other being able to click through to learn more about it.

Further, I am reevaluating my social net worth. If I can’t get you to Like what I’m posting after 3 or 4 months then maybe what I post is not relevant enough to you; so, essentially I am firing myself from updating you about my life. Pardon me. I am going to try harder – in your absence. facebook_letterhead_design_by_behruz-d5qubeg Thus far I have narrowed the 3500 to about 2000 as of today. It would be less, but I am

still a popular gal and I’ve added more that I’ve met along the way in the last few weeks. And still I have about 105 more people who I will not add because

I am not interested in another party promoter inviting me to all his parties in another part of the country that I am not visiting soon and won’t make the trip just for his party.

…receiving invitations to Like pages that people create and their personal posts are boring, so why would I follow a page which will be equal in the snooze-ville department?

and for those who think or believe that because we have 300 or even 4 mutual friends in common that we should also connect.

Trust that I am not complete with unfriending. I have more people who...

  • Complain too much.
  • Are too silent and seem to only come on to lurk others’ posts – Perhaps that’s what you have been doing. If it is, stop it. This is SOCIAL media after all.
  • When I reach out via chat and start a conversation they are boring as hell. They are not doing anything new.
  • Are at work, but are on Facebook and type back in the chat they are at work. Mind you, they are not in the marketing field, such as myself, these people have been nurses, in the real estate industry, or in other fields.
  • Ask for advice incessantly with no plans to include SocialMediumSphere in their future marketing plans – believe me, I know because it’s been over a year (in many cases, 2-3 years) and I do take mental notes of it. It’s one thing to make referrals and another to pump for information where you are intentionally being a user.
  • High school and elementary “friends” – we did not get along then, so why would we now? I literally just had a cyber fight with an old high school mate where she reminded me of how she was in high school: bi-polar much. Gladly, we are no longer associated on Facebook. Or, the other type of ex-classmate where we knew each other, but not really and still today you are not interacting, so…what’s the point again?

Again, this is all on me and my reasoning as to why we cannot remain Friends in Facebook-land. I think I’m not in a place to where I can appreciate the aforementioned classes of people. I’m going to meditate and then I’m going to work on me and be sure that I am Facebook friend-worthy material so that someone does not send me this same letter.

Happy posting!

  • How many searches have you conducted and been lead to a Wikipedia website in order to learn more and to get more of the story? There is a story behind that…in fact, there are several stories. Wikipedia is not comprised of only 1 person, but thousands who contribute their time and energy in order to share the full story.

Wikipedia is a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. is an American 501 charitable organization. Wikimedia is a global movement whose mission is to bring free educational content to the world.

Through various projectschapters, and the support structure of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia strives to bring about a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

The open nature of Wikipedia has led to various concerns, such as the quality of writing, the amount of vandalism, and the accuracy of information. But I have been a Facebook friend of a fellow Wiki for a while now. She recently traveled to Hong Kong for Wikimania 2013.

Sandister allowed me to interview her via Facebook chat and here she shares about her time with Wiki and setting up a Ghanaian Wiki chapter.

What made you begin with Wiki Ghana?

Are you a part of the Wiki Women too? If so, tell more about that part and what made you join them.

  • I have always been interested in writing and also social media. Wikis allowed me the best of both worlds. So when a friend invited me to help him create a group that uses and contributes to wikis of the Wikimedia Foundation, I instantly agreed. We founded Planning Wikimedia Ghana. So we could focus on Ghanaian content on Wikipedia and any other Wikimedia wiki that applied.

  • Questions:

What about the Wiki Women portion? Any comments? Also, what benefits does one gain by doing Wiki?

  • So much to apply! I met the people I have been interacting with online physically. Which is important for networking. Some groups like ours have grown to become Non profits. That is the ultimate status so I learnt these: -Ghana has unique issues because of underdeveloped digital technology so we are going to need a lot of creativity to gather a big community here. -I gathered resources both digital and print to bring home for our campaigns -Network with other African groups, it makes things easier -Strive for excellence, Wikimedia is looking for “world domination” aka worldwide access and contribution to our wikis. Therefore make more contributors/members!

I haven’t been able to join Wiki Women fully. I have an on going outreach in Ghana that I needed to focus on. But after the conference, I realized synergy is key. I met some of the team and I will work towards some collaboration for female members that may come.
  • Benefits — some people have full time jobs in WMF -the next is engagement. It has the same kind of leverage Twitter and Facebook can give you.

  • Questions:
  • How do you make it a fulltime paid job?

Did you meet other Wikis (is that a real name? lol) of whom you aspire to be like?
  • Sandister Tei

There are so many opportunities. Once you are in the community you will most def hear something that you may qualify for and you apply. I met other Wikimedians. But as to what I want to do in the community, getting Ghana chaptered is my main concern.

What is a step towards getting Ghana chaptered? When do you foresee that happening?

  • Sandister Tei
  • Getting more people contributing info about Ghana to the wikis is the way to chapter-ship

How many people would that amount to? Or, is there a certain # of contributions that must be made monthly/

  • Sandister Tei

It is different for everyone what the participation is so I can’t say.

Read more about Sandister’s trip to Hong Kong and to learn more about what Wikis speak about when they get together.

If your brain isn’t already buzzing with ideas on how to best utilize WikiPedia for your business and online marketing campaigns, here are some suggestions:

Presenting a point of view that is objective is key. This can be helpful in many cases and especially those where some damage control is necessary.

Verifiable information must also be presented. If you have information that has been shared before, then this is the perfect medium to present your business, name, or brand.

As per Sandister, Wiki is not the easiest to load information to because of it’s verification process, but to assist PR professionals along the way they also have a handy guide.

Social Business Tools

As I assist many businesses with their social media campaigns I learn and see that their employees are a major asset to their brand and always encourage them to utilize these voices.

A good way to test this theory is by utilizing some social business tools a.k.a. business intranet.

As we become more of an “in the cloud” society relying on digital space rather than office space, there is a way to communicate in a manner of which keeps everything in one place instead of by email, IMs, and Facebook chat.

Are you a part of a business that is a hybrid or your company office space is in the cloud? Yammer to the rescue!

Yammer is a social business network designed to use for private communication within organizations or between organizational members and groups. Once you sign up for the service you can create your profile and then invite others to join you and separate them according to a department or group.

Yammer leads with What are you working on? which triggers the inner hybrid office thoughts to share so that you can all stay abreast of what each is working on and offer information accordingly. Efficiency.

There is a free service as well as paid service starting at $5 per user per month. The layout includes a live stream as well as the ability to upload the mobile app. Additionally, there are also the opportunities to send and receive messages, IMs, the ability to see who is online at the present moment, communities that are separated, the ability to follow people, and more.

Currently I use Yammer and several other tools like it because I assist several organizations with their social media campaigns. Most of the companies I have never met in person. We use these tools to keep in touch with how the social media campaign is fairing and if there are any questions, suggestions, or comments. I’m sure for those with bigger companies, 40+,  this could be very beneficial to keep in touch and up to date on projects as you work throughout the day. You can also customize your company logo to appear to keep uniformity for those in your group.

So imagine, at a conference, you and the company could have side conversations and take notes about the event without tweeting it in to the Twitterverse or sending an email. Instead you are in the moment of the event and able to respond to each other quicker. Another example is when the company is trying to get out projects and do their work. Everyone needs to stay in touch and know how that is looking and utilizing a social intranet can best help.

Another term, social business, was created to describe how companies can generate greater value for their ecosystem by adding a social overlay. The first-generation social business was defined by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus. The term evolved to a second generation by the Dachis Group to incorporate a social element interconnecting the various business constituents including marketing, R&D, customer support and suppliers. This second-generation meaning of social business is often tied to shared value and can encompass the use of social media tools.

In a social business, ideas and information flow horizontally, vertically, from the bottom and from the top; throughout the business. If you work in an office environment you know all too well the different syndromes that can occur because of how much money a person makes or if they are the favorite of the CEO. In this social business environment you get rid of such protocols and get to the answer of what is good and best for the company to move forward.

Will you be signing on to include your company or group? Are you already using this social network service? Leave me a note and let me know your thoughts.

Benefits to using a social business tool:

  • Equal sharing of input and ideas
  • Accountability – was Sharon or Dave supposed to get more information and dropped the ball? Then you can better see how to go about facilitating duties and to help co-workers in their jobs; foster collaboration and get the job done in a more efficient manner
  • Tap in to the talents of your employees. There’s something to be said about goofing off and having a little fun with the social business tool. That is oftentimes where the great ideas derive from. It’s not always about doing the same thing, but making it seem like it is different. Your company/brand will be presented as an empty, but nice looking vessel.

Remember the video where the dad shoots the teen’s computer? I was instantly intrigued by the words on the screen: Dad shoots teen. The natural side of being nosey and interested won over and I clicked through to learn that these search words lead to a father who demanded respect.

This dad was very upset about the disrespectful messages his teen daughter posted on Facebook. I sympathized and wanted to see what he did in this video. I smiled because I could relate because I too have a teenaged daughter and we have had the talk about respecting ourselves in the social media realm.

The dad proceeds to shoot up his daughter’s laptop and over 100,000 viewers later he’s famous. Naturally this made me think about how my own clients want instant social media success.

Get Instant Social Media Success and Go Viral!

  • Firstly, you must be sensational. What do you have to say that is different from everyone else? Certainly there is something as related to the adage that all of us have a story to tell.
  • Secondly, there is no such thing as bad publicity, so if this dad were seeking more IT jobs (his career), then he certainly now has their attention. If he had started a YouTube video trying to get clients to buy from him that would not have worked. Audiences like to be dazzled first.
  • Lastly, base your product or brand around something, anything! Do not start off asking/begging/pleading that the product be bought. Your product will be treated the same as the telemarketers: disconnect and hang up.

*Disclaimer: Title is not an invitation for you to go about shooting things. Duh.

This is a big leap, but we will take it. Is your business small and just starting out? Or, is your business trying to get to the next level? Then we want to work with you.

All of this for $899* – for 1 full year. We guarantee you will grow or we will refund your money. Ready? Let’s start today:

*Once we have met our limit of assisting 10 businesses with this deal it will no longer be available. Update: 3 have taken advantage of this offer thus far.

Something I thought was funny as I notice that the social media world seems to be dominated by egotistical men. Almost everyone is an expert or guru when it comes to this digital conversation. I enjoy reading about others and their successes and finds, but I do find it comical sometimes. It is a bit of a disappointment to see that we’ve switched to the digital office and it’s the same story. But to not get too down about it I wanted to share this information I found that I thought was comical.

In an excerpt from the July 1943 edition of a publication,Transportation Magazine, male supervisors received some “useful” advice about managing women in the workplace.

“There’s no longer any question whether transit companies should hire women for jobs formerly held by men. The draft and manpower shortage has settled that point,” the introduction ran. The point of the guidelines that followed were to help men find the ‘most efficient women available’.

“Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Women”:
1. “Pick young married women.” While they’re less likely to be ‘flirtatious’ they haven’t lost their ‘pep and interest’ in work, like their older married sisters presumably have.

2. If you do have to hire older women, the writer suggested choosing those who have held down a job before. “Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy.”

3. “General experience indicates that “husky” girls – those who are just a little on the heavy side – are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.”

4. “Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination – one covering female conditions.” Apparently this would afford the employer legal protection, but would also reveal if the potential employee had any ‘female weaknesses’ that would prevent them from working.

5. “Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they’ll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes.” While women are good at being told what to do, they lack initiative.

6. It’s also a good idea to vary your female employees’ duties. “Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.”

7. Women should receive plenty of rest breaks, but not so much for the rest. “A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.”

8. Unlike men, women cannot bear harsh criticism. “Never ridicule a woman – it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.”

9. “Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women.”

10. “Get enough size variety in operator’s uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can’t be stressed too much in keeping women happy.”

No, the introduction of hashtags to Facebook is no longer news, but observations can be made.

When I have searched for hashtags via Facebook I find many from varied people, but I am one who usually wants to connect because of this bond. Facebook, as we all know, does not encourage connecting to people you do not know. I’ve had numerous people tell me that they were banned from befriending others or that they were issued a warning because they tried to befriend someone they did not know outside of the network. As a matter of fact, I’m hearing about a LOT of complaints about Facebook, but that will be saved for another post.

For those who do not know what I’m referring to, read on…

Facebook now supports hashtags (this is a hashtag: #) to allow users to find and follow popular and topical conversations on the site. Users now can:

  • Search for a specific hashtag in their search bar.
  • Click on hashtags that originate on other services, such as Instagram
  • Compose posts directly from the hashtag feed and search results.

Users can still control who sees their posts, even if they contain hashtags, which is good…kinda. I will never understand why many choose to overreact to their privacy online. It does not exist, as we have seen from the recent news of Snowden.

Hashtags are expected to increase brand interaction. Without these hashtags, users were limited to seeing posts by their friends, the pages they had liked, and the pages their friends had liked – as well, of course, as any promoted posts.

Of course, there is also such a thing as hashtag overkill.

What hashtag fun have you been having on Facebook?

We are all preparing for the end of Google Reader and frantically learning about how we can change all of our online reading over to another network. It’s official, and no longer a rumor, that after July 1, 2013, Google Reader will no longer be available.

Although I’ve used Google Reader it is not the only place I’ve read my online material for RSS. I used Google Reader to connect with clients’ related information in order to keep all of their industry updates/information/articles/news in one place. For my non-work side I’ve also used my Yahoo! personal page. Here, I have a LOT of travel related blogs to read.

Google Reader

Here are some directions you can choose to go since Google Reader will be buried soon:

News Blur – I’m all a fan for fun applications. The applications which make it inviting to want to use include a great layout that is vibrant, easy to find information making it easy to navigate, and a free flowing feel. NewsBlur’s iPhone, iPad, and Android apps will bring you the latest stories on the go. The free accounts are allowed to follow 64 blogs, 10 stories at a time, and public sharing options. When created an account I was asked immediately to enter my credit card info. in order to begin the Premium service. I decided to check my email (can you say easily distracted?) and saw that I did indeed have a free account so I proceeded from the link provided in my email.

Feedly is leaning towards being my favorite as far as suggesting more articles. I am one who does not want to only read my favorite bloggers and articles, but I also want to know about those who are new on the block and may have a different perspective. Call it the creative side of me. ;-) Feedly offers layout choices that let you read the news in the manner you choose—whether it’s straight headlines from top to bottom, full articles, neatly arranged tiles, or pretty images all laid out on a page. You can also share stories with your friends and post them to your favorite social networks. I will not be doing that part as I am not a fan of seeing article after article shared when I visit Facebook. Maybe I will share via Twitter though, so more to come for that aspect.

Netvibes is actually a social aggregation (heart this part) and dashboard service, but it is also a good RSS news reader. Netvibes does not have mobile apps though, so this may be a factor to you when you’re on the go and not sitting at your laptop.

I like Pulse’s tiled approach. It is very Pinterest-esque and also appeals to that side of me that wants to see things that are visually stimulating and inviting.

These are not the only readers available. There are numerous more. Which ones can you recommend or will be using?

What’s a Polyvore?

If you didn’t know the name, then here is a breakdown, and nice infographic from SocialFresh, of the social media website that happened BEFORE Pinterest.
